Christmas is almost upon us folks!
I don’t know about you, but given the restrictions in place this year it feels a little harder to summon up much of a festive mood. Usually there are wonderful outdoor Christmas fairs to explore with all the attendant buzz, & visits to, or meals out with friends & family whilst wearing all our finery, coupled with a glass or two of overpriced fizz.
This year, we accept it’s going to be a much more sedate affair. Office Christmas parties are a no-no (some people might be thanking the Lordy for that small mercy), & Christmas fairs are either thin on the ground or too risky to attend for those of us who are vulnerable. No massive round-the-table Christmas dinners for all & sundry allowed (during which some poor souls are usually perched half-buttocked, on saggy bottomed, metal-rimmed garden chairs). For many this will be a huge loss. For others however, it will inevitably take the pressure off what can be a very stressful occasion & provide a feeling of blessed relief. I have a feeling that what happens this year might well prove a model for what happens in some households for the next.
So anyway, lets look at the positives of this year’s more-muted Christmas celebrations;
- We can still celebrate (celebrations don’t have to be huge, just meaningful).
- Small mortgages don’t have to be applied for, to pay for everything
- Turkeys will be happy (at least the big ones)
- There is a very real excuse for saying no to people we would rather not entertain at any time of the year if we’re honest.
- Rusting garden chairs can stay outside where they belong
- A lit Christmas tree still holds it’s usual magic, & lifts the spirit
- We can watch Elf for the 20th time.
- We can remember the true meaning of Christmas which is that it is a time for loving, giving, sharing & remembering all those we love, & have loved.
