If you live in, or if you visit the Lake District (when it’s safe again) you are going to bump into these cute little beasties. They are literally everywhere helping to keep the fells nicely mown & adding something special to the character of this stunning area.
The name Herdwick originates from the Norse ‘herdvyk’, meaning sheep pasture. An icon of the Lakes, these hardy creatures can survive for days under snow & on exposed fellsides due to the amazing insulation properties of their wool.
Lambs are born black, after which their fleeces gradually lighten until after their first shearing when they turn a light grey. Amazingly, they are ‘hefted’ to the land they inhabit, which means they hold to their place on the fell without the need for fencing, having been taught a sense of belonging by their mothers during their first summer.
